Robots happy to be on top The Robots of Doom are in the middle of their best season ever. The Robots are currently sitting atop the AA Northern League Conference a first in the clubs history. After spending many seasons in the basement and mid league the club is now riding high. The influx of new talent and players having career seasons are keys to the club success. The Robots of Doom feel that one of the keys to success this season is the depth of talent they have. The Robots have used 4 different starting pitchers so far in 2010 and all have contributed by winning games. Jamie Sherlock the veteran pitcher anchors the rotation, undefeated this season with a stellar ERA. With the loss of Martin Bell the clubs second pitcher last season both Seb Yaseen and Zak O’boyle have been relied upon to take on the role of the club second pitcher. Young Dale Hargan has also took to the mound for the R.O.D pitching a complete game win over the Oldham North Stars. The infield of the Robots of Doom has played a very tight defence and made many great plays so far this season. Perennial gold glover Yogi berry has been in fine form making his usual great diving players to rob batters of base hits. Seb Yaseen the captain of the infield when not pitching has played great defence at third and with a rocket of an arm has thrown out many players hoping for an infield hit. Melvin Cullen was pencilled in to be the clubs new second baseman after the retirement of Wayne Clark. However when Dale Hargan joined the club Dale soon took over the role at second base. Dale’s years of experience and past GB experience lend a steady hand to the infield. Cullen continues to make progress and will soon become a regular feature in the clubs infield. The clubs outfield continues to make many changes and improvements. This was a concern for the clubs manager after the previous season and needed re-tooling. Veteran outfielder Paul Wilson is having a career year at the bat and looking after the young hopefuls in the outfield. Dom Clarke, Billy Roberts, Mike Bateson and Kieran O’leary all have ambitions of making their mark in the clubs outfield. The clubs depth in many positions allows players to contribute without feeling the pressure of having no relief. Chris Clifton is the clubs number one back catcher, but veteran Rico Toniolo shares the weekly responsibilities and runs the bullpen sessions. Both Jamie Sherlock and Seb Yaseen are well established back catchers that can fill in so that this pressure filled role doesn’t lead to a catcher burning out and leading to injury. Current GB star and R.O.D member Zak O’boyle is the clubs leading offensive player. Zak leads all major offensive categories and made several key hits for the club this season. Zak while pitching shares first base duties with veteran Matthew Norburn. These two bring big bats with them contributing to the clubs success in scoring runs this season. Recently while playing left field Zak threw out a runner with a rocket of a throw from deep left to first base, much to the dismay of the runner and all those in attendance. The Robots of Doom are riding high on the contributions of many. Veterans and rookies all are playing their roles to take the team into uncharted waters. The team still has many tough games ahead of them and will have to continue to play well as a team if they wish to stay atop of the league.
