"[Having Mort back] instantly makes us more competitive"
GM, Matthew Norburn
Paul Mortimer's situation is quite simple, impress the coaches during spring training and he will be starting for the Robots of Doom this
year. That's all he has to do.
Mort returns to the club after missing all of the 2007 season and most of the 2006 season due to injury. In his absence the team has
undergone some changes and it will certainly be a period of adjustment for Mortimer. On his return to the team on 2008, Mortimer was recently
quoted as saying:
"It's good to be back! 2006 was hell after the ankle injury. I couldn't walk properly for weeks and then it was
months before I could even contemplate running. I hated not being able to play and my comeback late in the season was probably a mistake, I wasn't
fit. 2007 was a bit of a sabbatical. I wanted to make sure the ankle was strong and, more importantly, with a new addition future Bolton junior team
I needed to spend some quality time with the family. You just can't get baseball out of your head though and I had to come back. I was going nuts!".
His previous position at second base had been played by veteran South African Phil Daft; Mortimer had this to say about competition at second
base:
"It's always a good thing. The fact we're pushing for the same position means we're both going to have to be at the top of our game.
I'm not overly worried, Phil's getting on a bit now and his knees will probably not last the full year [joke]!! Besides, I could always turn my attention
to Yogi's [shortstop Tony Berry] position!".
Paul Mortimer had a stellar start to his baseball career, winning Rookie of the year in 2003 then MVP in 2004; Mortimer was also a perennial
Gold Glove winner and often led the team in stolen bases. General Manager Norburn stated,
"It will be a great addition to the club to have Mort
back, it instantly makes us much more competitive". When asked if Mort would be the starting second baseman or would Daft continue in that role
Norburn said
"Lets wait and see, I have a lot of faith in both players to get the job done, this is a good thing for our team, not a bad
thing."
The Robots of Doom infield is set to be one of the best in the clubs history with experienced players filling all key positions.
